The tour begins on a hill overlooking Walden Pond, about 100 years ago.

About half of Walden Pond is shown here. The small inlet across the pond and to the right is now called Thoreau's Cove — Henry's cabin was just off this cove. The railroad runs past the pond to the left of the area photographed. The other end of the pond includes a swimming area today.

The trees have grown since this photo was taken, and you cannot see the pond as easily from here today. For an overview of the pond, see Henry's survey map of Walden Pond.
